Importance of being an individual and helping in the family

• Three stories Isabelle It,  My Helping Hands and Special Me.

• The story Isabelle It is about a girl who sees the word  it in different words. This introduces the concept that smaller words can be found in bigger words. She likes this word because it is her last name. This can lead into a discussion about names. The story also makes use of rhyming words.  Rhyming is an important early reading skill. Research has shown children introduced to rhyme in the early years experience greater success at learning to read.  Letter Ii is introduced within the context of the story.

• Reading - The stories are repetitive enough to allow kindergarten and preschool children to read them on their own after they have been introduced as a shared reading experience. This serves as a powerful method for young children to not only gain a better understanding of the reading process but also gaining a positive attitude towards it by having them experience reading the story on their own (pretend reading) and the pride of completing the book (interactive component).

• Phonemic Awareness- in completing the interactive component within the book, children are further directed how little words can be found in big words.

• Math -  related theme picture cards are included.  These are used for children to cut and paste to make a picture pattern.  This is a great way to integrate a math activity and fine-motor skills. 

• Science - how heat produces change is introduced.

• My Helping Hands is about how children can help at home, school and in their community. This presents an opportunity for discussions on how the children in your class can be helpful. The story introduces the letter Hh within the story context. The story makes use of delightful cartoon characters to introduce this story.  It is repetitive enough for young children to read on their own if it has been introduced as a shared reading experience. 

• Alphabet - templates and suggestions provided to further extend letters introduced within the stories.

• Math - candle counting cards for the children to use for practicing one-one-number correspondence.

• Special Me is a story about identity and what makes us special. The girl in this story displays perseverance by overcoming an obstacle. She builds a spaceship that falls apart. This doesn’t prevent her from rebuilding it again. The story allows to you to further expand on this concept.

• The unit gives suggestions for group time, dramatic play area, math center, science center, craft ideas, printing center, reading center and more!

• The children will be introduced to picture patterning, rhyme, one-to-one number correspondence and how heat produces change.

• Blending sounds together to form words continues to be explored.
