Key Concepts

Learning about the different dinosaurs that existed a long time ago.

• Two repetitive stories Different Dinosaurs and The Dinosaur Quiz.

• The story Different Dinosaurs is about different dinosaurs that existed and their special features. The letter Dd is introduced within the context of the story.  This is a great informational story for young children and can be a base for other learning opportunites through the theme. 

• The story Dinosaur Quiz  asks questions about the most familiar dinosaurs. The children are now the dinosaur experts and should have enough knowledge to answer the questions.  Previous knowledge of what they learned would be used to complete the book. 

• 16 picture cards of different dinosuars are included.  These can be used for sorting or matching.

• Math 1 - children stamp, use stickers or bingo markers to complete the worksheet.

• Math 2 - children can cut the dinosuar strips and place them in the correct number order.

• Math 3 - children can use the dinosaur picture cards to make a dinosaur picture pattern.

• 8 larger dinosaur templates are included, these can be used for crafts.

• Writing - writing templates are included.  These are great to use after a shared writing experience.  It is important for young children to also see the writing process modeled.  Young children can have an adult scribe their ideas.

• Interesting information - included in the unit is more intesting information on all the dinosaurs presented in the stories.

• Reading - The stories are repetitive enough to allow kindergarten and preschool children to read them on their own after they have been introduced as a shared reading experience. This serves as a powerful method for young children to not only gain a better understanding of the reading process but also gaining a positive attitude towards it by having them experience reading the story on their own (pretend reading) and the pride of completing the book (interactive component).

• The unit gives suggestions for group time, dramatic play area, math center, craft ideas, science center, printing center, reading center and more!

• The children will be sorting dinosaur pictures, using one-one correspondence and ordering numbers.

• The children will be writing a story about having a pet dinosaur. A writing template is provided.
