Integrating learning activities into a seasonal theme

Two repetitive stories Goofy Glenda and Willie the Wacky Wizard. Both stories tie in with the seasonal theme. The unit introduces the letters Gg and Ww in a fun way.

• The story Goofy Glenda is about a witch that stirs her brew and out pops Gg words. A delightful way to introduce the letter Gg.

• Alphabet - follow-up suggestions,activities and templates to reinforce recognition and sound of Gg and Ww are included.

• Reading - The stories are repetitive enough to allow kindergarten and preschool children to read them on their own after they have been introduced as a shared reading experience. This serves as a powerful method for young children to not only gain a better understanding of the reading process but also gaining a positive attitude towards it by having them experience reading the story on their own (pretend reading) and the pride of completing the book (interactive component). 

• Science - suggestions for a sound experimentation to incorporate into your Science Center.

• Writing - a suggestion for a follow-up writing activity as an extension to the theme.  Younger children would dictate their ideas to an adult assistant.  This is an important step in understanding the writing process. A template is included and would make a great craft display.

• Math - children develop a greater understanding of one-to-one number correspondence by using the related picture number cards.  These can be used for direct instruction and then placed in the math center as a further extension of the learning activity. All activities are related to the theme.

• The story Willie the Wacky Wizard is about a wizard who waves his wand and funny words with the review sounds of a, d, g and c appear.  It also introduces the letter Ww within the story context.  This is a great review of the letters and sounds the children have been introduced to so far. A very funny and effective method of introducing a new letter and reviewing sounds.

• The unit gives suggestions for group time, dramatic play area, math center, science center, craft ideas, printing center, reading center and more!

• Introduces the idea of blending sounds together to form words.
