Farm and Zoo Theme Lesson Plans and Activities

This theme unit is a combination of the Farm and Zoo mini-themes.  To gain a better understanding of what is found in each of these mini-themes preview these pages on the left-hand sidebar links.

Farm Theme Page
What is included?

1.  Two emergent readers where the children are actively involved in completing the books.  The children must match the adult farm animals with their babies.  In the other reader the children must find and match the rhyming pictures (a good phonemic awareness activity).

2.  Related craft suggestions and templates are included.

3.  Connection to Literature - the story "The Little Red Hen" is often incorporated into the Farm theme unit.  You will find a follow-up emergent reader to the story and craft suggestions (puppet templates to act out the story).

4.  Theme pictures for sorting.

5.  Math - pictures for graphing their favorite farm animals and cow number cards.

6.  There are many farm animal templates that can be used for other farm activities.

Zoo Theme Page
1.  Two emergent readers are included.   Again, the children are actively involved in completing the books.  In the first reader part of the zoo animal is hiding, children must find, cut and paste the zoo animal hiding.  The other book is informational in content and outlines certain zoo animals and their special features.

2.  You will also find craft suggestions and templates related to the theme.

3.  Connection to Literature - The story "Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?" focuses on zoo animals and the sound they make.  You will find the corresponding emergent reader to the book and pictures to make the related predictable chart.

4.  There are many zoo animal templates to use to create other zoo activities.
