Follow-up Activity - Downloadable Books for Emergent Readers
The emergent reader The Napping Noozies found in the theme unit is a great follow-up to use as a shared reading experience after reading the book (the reader can be made into a big book). It introduces the letter letter "Nn" within its story context. The children find, count and color the little characters called "napping noozies". The reader also introduces the children to the concept of subtraction. The noozies wake-up and run away to play, leaving some of the other noozies behind to nap. Letter "Nn" Recognition - Picture Mnemonics
Research has shown that children have better recollection of letter-sound associations when it is taught in conjunction with picture mnemonics. This craft activity involves children being actively involved in associating the picture to the letter and more effectively making this more meaningful to them. The purpose is to have them associate the letter "Nn" to the initial sound in "napping". The children paint and color the "Nn" napping as shown in the photograph. The template is found in the theme book.
The book One Hungry Monster: A Counting Rhyme Book is a wonderful book to incorporate number counting and literacy through rhyme. The children will really enjoy this book.
