Theme Games

Games for the Bugs Theme Unit

Caterpillar (co-operation game)

  • Divide groups into 5-7 children.
  • Children lineup behind each other.
  • Players sit and wrap their legs around the person in front of them to form a caterpillar.  Can the caterpillars move forward, backwards and sideways?  Can the caterpillars move to a designated spot?
  • If the caterpillar disconnects, it must reconnect before moving again.

Butterfly Race

Equipment - feather representing butterflies

  • divide children into small teams (4 or 5 per team)
  • children try to blow the feather (butterfly) to a designated spot
  • the team that is able to get it to the designated spot without droping it is the winner
  • if the feather falls on the floor, the team must start over from the beginning

Games for the Weather Theme Unit

Kindergarten and Preschool Games

Children in the Rain Game (like musical chairs).  Music is required.

  • Divide the children into 2 groups.  One group is the trees and the other group are the children caught in the rain.
  • Ensure the tree group has one less member
  • The trees are scattered throughout the gymnasium with their legs wide apart.
  • Teacher begins to play the music.
  • The children that are not the trees are skipping around the gymnasium to the music.
  • When the music stops, this signals the rain storm has begun.  The children must find safety from the rain under the trees.
  • The child that could not find safety will retreat to the sidelines or run around the gym acting like falling rain.

Shadow Tag

  • Explain how a shadow is formed
  • partner children up
  • children decide who will be the leader first and who will be the shadow
  • the shadow follows the leader
  • the leader must try to lose his/her shadow by making different movements
  • children freeze at the sound of the whistle
  • discuss how successful they were at following the shadow

Games for the Dinosaur Theme Unit

Dinosaur Egg Relay

  • Children can play this like the egg and spoon relay

Catch a Dinosaur (play this like dodge ball)

  • Children form a circle
  • Divide the children in half. Half of the children go into the circle and half go out.
  • The children in the outer circle take 3 steps back.
  • The children in the outer circle are to capture the dinosaurs in the middle of the circle by throwing a ball.  If they hit a dinosaur below the waist they move to the outer circle
  • the dinosaur remaining is the KING OF DINOSAURS.
