Spring Theme Unit Activities and Lesson Plans

Spring Predictable Chart

Using a predictable chart to introduce the reading process and the signs of Spring is a great teaching tool.  You will find accompanying pictures for the sentences in the member's area.  The predictable text reads as follows:

Spring brings birds.  Spring brings leaves.

Springs brings flowers. Spring brings rain.

Spring brings umbrellas.  Spring brings butterflies.

Spring brings kites.  Spring brings out the gardeners.

Accompanying Emergent Reader Book Sample Pages

In the link below you will find sample pages from the emergent reader to accompany the predictable chart.

Sample Page in Black and White

Pictures for the predictable chart and accompanying emergent readers are found in the member's area or "Seasons" theme book.

An Emergent Reader Printable Book Used for Shared Reading

In the link below you will find a predictable emergent reader printable book titled Goodbye Winter.  The story introduces children to the changes that occur in spring.  The story line is simple and predictable making it a great story for shared reading.  Information on shared reading can be found by just clicking on the Reading Strategies link.

Goodbye Winter

Welcoming Spring Writing Activity  - Spring has Sprung

This activity makes a great Spring bulletin board craft and writing display.  The templates are found in the Spring theme unit or accessed in the member's area.  The bunny would be cut and assembled as displayed in the photograph.  The children can  complete the writing template by  telling what they like about Spring.  A blank template is also available to create a different writing composition.

Dressing for the Weather - Raining - Spring

Version 1

The children color or paint the clothes on the body.  The body is cut (this would likely require adult intervention).  The child's head shot would be cut and added (this would require cropping to fit the body).  The children would color and cut the umbrella and the rain hat; these would be added to complete the project.

Version 2

The children would color the clothes on the body.  They would add facial features (eyes, nose and mouth) to the head.  After, the body would be cut.  The children would color and cut the umbrella and the rain hat; these would be added to complete the project.

Duck Under the Umbrella Craft

The duck and umbrella craft shown in the photograph could also be a great spring craft.  The children cut or paint the duck outline and add the umbrella.

Shape Umbrella

The umbrella could be painted/colored or copied on colored paper.  The shapes could be copied on colored paper or colored.  The children would cut the shapes and glue them on the dotted lines on the umbrella as displayed in the photograph.
