Set Values - Number Recognition
There are many suggestions listed in each theme unit to help develop in this area.
Ocean Theme Activity - children make sea urchins
Children in the center form 9 balls out of playdough. Place 54 toothpicks in the center. Children draw a number card (number cards from 2-10 found on pages 38-39 in the Ocean theme unit ). They must stick this many spines (toothpicks) on one of the balls of playdough. Discard the card chosen and pick out another number card. The activity is completed once all the cards and toothpicks are gone. The children place the sea urchins in order according to the least amount of spines (toothpicks) to the most amount or vice versa.
Valentines Theme Unit
Stamp,sponge-paint or use stickers to represent the amount of hearts shown. This activity is on pages 23-25 in the Valentines theme unit.
All About Me Theme Unit
Label plates 1- 10. Place 55 candles in the center. The children must place the correct amount of candles on each plate. There should be no candles left over after the activity is completed. The children place the least amount of candles to the greatest amount in order or vice versa.
Teddy Bear Numbers
Teddy bear number cards are found in the Number theme page. The children can place the correct number of snap cubes or other manipulatives to represent the number shown. The bears could also be sequenced in the correct number order .
Sequencing Numbers
In the theme units you will notice picture strips representing the different numbers. The children are to cut and paste the strips on to paper and sequence them in the correct order.
Graphing Numbers
The graph below is labeled from 1-12. Children roll two dice They must count the number rolled and color in that number on the graph. The game is over when one number is all colored in. Children can predict in advance what number they think will be the most popular. This is also great for introducing the concept of addition.

Adding and Subtracting - emergent readers used to introduce this concept
On the website and throughout the program you will find stories (emergent readers) that introduce the concept of adding and subtracting. These are great to use for a shared reading experience and expand this into math. The interactive components of the readers would be completed and the characters in the story could be used to act out the story. Completing the books and acting out the story is a great way for the children to understand this concept.

The emergent reader The Napping Noozies found in the theme unit is a great follow-up to use as a shared reading experience after reading the book (the reader can be made into a big book). It introduces the letter letter "Nn" within its story context. The children find, count and color the little characters called "napping noozies". The reader also introduces the children to the concept of subtraction. The noozies wake-up and run away to play, leaving some of the other noozies behind to nap. See a sample page from the reader below:

Letter "Nn" Recognition - Picture Mnemonics
Research has shown that children have better recollection of letter-sound associations when it is taught in conjunction with picture mnemonics. This craft activity involves children being actively involved in associating the picture to the letter and more effectively making this more meaningful to them. The purpose is to have them associate the letter "Nn" to the initial sound in "napping". The children paint and color the "Nn" napping as shown in the photograph. The template is found in the theme book.
The book One Hungry Monster: A Counting Rhyme Book is a wonderful book to incorporate number counting and literacy through rhyme. The children will really enjoy this book.
Follow-up Activity - Downloadable Books for Emergent Readers
The emergent reader Funny Monsters found in the theme unit is a great follow-up to use as a shared reading experience after reading the book (the reader can be made into a big book). It introduces the letter letter "Mm" within its story context. The children count the different body parts of the different funny monsters. A sample page is found in the link below:
