Fairy Tale Activities Theme and Lesson Plans

Preschool and Kindergarten Activities and Lesson Plans for Fairy Tales

Week 1 Plans Continued

Literacy Center Activities - Stations

Preschool and Kindergarten Activity One - Letter "Ff" Fairy Tale Wand

The template is found in the theme unit.  The children would paint or color the templates and glue them together.  This would be great to use as a pointer for "Read Around the Room" activities.  If this activity is used for this reason, it would be best to copy these on cardstock and laminate the wand.

Preschool and Kindergarten Activity Two - Read Around the Room

The theme unit has many color and black and white fairy tale pictures with labels, the children could use their new wand and point to all the pictures and read the word labels.

Preschool and Kindergarten Activity Three - Letter Match

Children match the castles with the matching letter.  Older children would match the lower case with the upper case.  Younger children match the two same letters.

Note:  The letters alone could be used to match with one corresponding castle.  This would save on copying.

Preschool and Kindergarten Activity Four - Letter "Ff" Sound Recognition - Phonemic Awareness

Note:  Example of this activity is shown below only this would be done with letter "Ff"

Prior to doing this activity the letter "Ff" sound has been introduced (for fairy or fairy tale).  The children have observed the formation of their lips when making the sound (the children used small mirrors to make this observation). In the member's area you will have access to 150 color and black and white pictures (under Alphabet Pictures).  Letter "Ff" sound pictures would be placed with other beginning sound pictures. The children would sort these.  A mirror could also be placed in the station for children to observe the formation of their lips while saying the word and focusing on the beginning sound.

Note:  The picture names should be explained to the children in advance.  Occasionally, it is not very clear what the picture is and some children with a poor vocabulary base may not be familiar it.  These pictures are also great for vocabulary building.

Preschool and Kindergarten Activity Five - Printing the Letter

In the link below you will find a printing book.  The letter "Ff" page could be completed.  Note:  more pictures to cut and paste on top to represent the letter "Ff" sound can be found in the member's area under the heading "Alphabet Pictures".

Preschool and Kindergarten Activity Six - Matching Visual Discrimination Activity

Word cards would be matched to the word on the picture as displayed in the photo.  The pictures could be displayed on a bulletin board for "Read Around the Room" purposes and beside each picture is a small bag.  Children put the matching word in the bag.  After, together with the class, a count could be done to see how many matches were found.

Note:  Letter stamps and magnetic letters could be used to make the word.

Preschool and Kindergarten Activity Seven

Making a Sentence

Cut the picture out from the emergent reader.  The children are given word cards like shown in the photograph (older children can cut the cards themselves).  The children glue the words on a strip of paper in the order represented from the predictable chart. Emphasize the importance of placing a period at the end because this is a sentence.

Note:  This activity could also be done on the pocket chart.

Writing Center Activities - Castle Shape Book

In the theme unit you will find a template of a castle that could be used to make a shape book.  Also you will find pictures of characters found in fairy tales with word labels on them.  The children could use these as guide for drawing their own or they can cut and paste the picture in the printing book and print the word. These are pictures of child drawings to encourage the children to attempt their own drawing.

Note: the word could also be stamped.

More Center Suggestions

Dramatic Play Center

A large castle could be made (the castle template found in the theme book could be enlarged on the overhead).  In the castle old clothes, magic wands and fairy tale puppets could be added to act out the fairy tales.
