Curriculum Guidelines

These were the curriculum guidelines used in producing Early Learning Solutions . Many of the center activities and stories will help you achieve these curriculum expectations.

Language Arts

  • Identify the front, back, title and author of a book.
  • Demonstrate top to bottom, left to right progression in reading.
  • Recognize the name of the alphabet letters, both upper- and lower-case.
  • Use this knowledge to identify their corresponding sounds in the beginning and ending of words, such as the m and n in the word man.
  • Make up words that rhyme (e.g. bunny and money.)
  • Begin the process of blending sounds together and reading CVC pattern words (e.g. d-a-d)
  • Begin to identify high frequency words or sight words (e.g. I, and, the.)
  • Able to recognize color words.
  • Orally recite the days of the week and the month.
  • Make story predictions by using picture clues.
  • Retell the story read.

Writing

  • Able to print his/her name legibly.
  • Print the alphabet letters both upper- and lower-case.
  • Use pictures, letters and words to communicate written expression.
  • Write the alphabet letters that correspond to the related sounds.
  • Begin to print simple words by blending the sounds together (e.g. c-a-t.)
  • Prints from left to right and from top to bottom .

Math

  • Understands one-to-one correspondence.
  • Sorts and classifies objects according to common characteristics.
  • Can recognize and create patterns. (e.g. red, blue, red, blue or boy, girl, boy, girl).
  • Understand simple bar graphs and interpret how they help us gather information.
  • Can count to 100.
  • Identify and print numbers 1-10.
  • Can identify and draw basic shapes such as rectangle, square, circle and triangle.
  • Able to reproduce these shapes.
  • Makes comparisons and can express them in terms of more, less, equal, heavier, warmer and cooler.
  • Tell time to the hour (not included in the program).
  • Identify half and whole (not included in the program).
  • Use positional words such as under, over, on, below and above.
  • Begin to make use of simple adding and subtracting problems. (e.g. 3 candies and 2 more equals 5).
  • Identifies penny, nickel, dime and quarter (not included in the program). Depending where you live this term may vary .

Social Studies and Science

The information within the theme units will meet most of the curriculum expectations in these two areas.
