The “Guided Reading, Alphabet and Sight Words Literacy Program” follows a balanced literacy approach for introducing the alphabet letters and their related sounds and all the Pre-primer sight words. This is a brief preview of what is included in this specific literacy unit. In this set of lesson plans, the selection “The Day It Rained Hearts” by Felicia Bond is used.
The companion emergent reader “It Rained Valentine Hearts” would be used as a follow-up to model the reading process and to introduce the following:

Literacy Center Activities
Each literacy unit contain follow-up literacy games and activities related to focus letters and their related sounds, rhyming and phonemic/phonological awareness activities. These activities are designed to be engaging and geared towards meeting the core curriculum outcomes.
Sight Word Activities
Each unit also includes sight word games and activities that target specific words in relation to that unit. In this unit the focus words are it, down, the, yellow. These words are introduced in context within the reader, making it meaningful to the students.
Follow-up Writing and Craft Activities
All lesson plan units include a follow-up writing activities.
In the craft activity displayed on the right, the students would cut the frame and color the hearts according the words displayed on them.
