Kindergarten and Writing

Modeling

The teacher/educator/parent is the best resource for providing a model for the children.  The educator would have a child dictate a sentence and print what the child says.  This relays to the child how oral speech or thoughts are translated into print. During this process, what a sentence is would be explained, how it begins with and capital and model how to stretch sounds of simple CVC words to determine how they are spelled would be modeled.

Independent Writing

Generally, children would draw a picture and write about it.  Once the children have completed the Kinderplans "Alphabet Program" they will be more able to sound out simple words and print a few sight words on their own.  When students are required to write independently, they should also be given a guide in which they can refer to in terms of letters and their corresponding sounds and correct letter formation.  A guide used in the Kinderplans program is displayed on the left.

Stages In the Writing Process
In order to understand how a student's writing should progress, it is important to understand the stages in which a child develops.  In my blog post below I address this issue.

Writing Stages

Integration of Kindergarten Writing into Specific Themes

Below you will find how writing activities have been integrated into specific themes combining a craft activity.  You will find more samples within the different theme units found on the site.

Weather Theme Writing

Weather Theme -  Kindergarten Writing Activity

Color Theme WritingThe umbrella and cloud templates found in the theme unit can be used for making shape books.  The children can write and draw or they can use words printed on each picture to use as a model as displayed in the photograph.

Color Theme

Clown Writing Activity

The teacher would model the writing process by having the children dictate their favorite color.  After, this would be printed on the balloon and added to the clown to make it appear like he/she is holding it.

Crayon Writing Activity

The crayon template could also be used as a shape book.  The children could color the crayon their favorite color and print the color word on it.

All About Me Theme WritingAll About Me Theme

My Special Gift Writing Activity

Each child will dictate "My special gift is....." as the teacher models writing the sentence on chart paper.  After the children can print the sentence on the gift template, using the the one provided in the member's area.

The template could also be used as a shape book to use at the writing center for children to complete their own daily writing activity.

Pet Theme Writing

Family and Pets -  Kindergarten Writing Activity

Again, the teacher would model writing information that the children learned about caring for pets.  The writing activity would be combined with a craft activity like the one displayed on the right.  The children would print one or more sentences on the pet templates provided in the member's area and print what they learned about caring for pets.  They could use the teacher's model as a guide.

Five Senses Theme

Each time a senses activity is completed the children can write on the template provided how they use that specific sense.  Examples:  i see ..., I taste..., I feel...., I smell... and I hear....  Once again, the teacher can provide a model for the children to follow.
Ocean Theme Writing

Ocean Theme -  Kindergarten Writing Activity

Zoo Theme WritingThe children would color (sponge-paint) the whale template and cut it out.  The arms would be cut to hold the writing template.  The writing template would be copied (colored paper) and cut.  There are two versions available (blank one and complete the sentence version).  The children could print information about what they learned about ocean animals.

Zoo Theme

The children would color and assemble the lion or hippopotamus writing templates.  What is written will depend on the student's ability.  The children could print a sentence or word in the prepared template telling what they learned about zoo animals.  They could also write about an Earth Day Writingexciting experience they had on the field trip to the zoo.  Young children would dictate what they want printed.

Space, Robots and Saving the Earth Theme

Farm Theme WritingThe focus in this theme is on helping the Earth.  The children will write about what they can do to help the Earth.  How this activity is completed will depend on the age of the child.  Some children will be able to write this themselves using a model and other would need to have this information scribed.  The children would assemble the template and complete it by printing how they can help the Earth. The writing template is shown on the right where the face represents the Earth.

Farm Theme - Kindergarten Writing Activity

Barn Template

The children will be using the barn shape template to make a farm shape book. The template would be painted and cut. After, the children can choose a farm animal to insert inside the barn doors or draw their own.  After, the name of the animal would be printed on the barn template
Bugs Theme Writing

Bugs Theme

Fairy Tale WritingThe children could use the lady bug and butterfly templates to make a bugs shape book. Younger children can cut and paste the insect pictures along with the matching word (visual discrimination).  Older children can print their own sentence about an insect using what was written during shared writing time as a model.  The children could also be provided with a template to complete their own sentence where they would be required to fill in a word (could be a sight word).  Example:  Insects have three body parts.  The children would only be required to print the sight word have.

Fairy Tale Theme

The castle would be made into a shape book.  The children can make simple drawings and print the name beside it.
