Smart Board for Kindergarten and Preschool

USING THE SMART BOARD AND NOTEBOOK SOFTWARE ACTIVITIES

Preschool and Kindergarten classrooms are now being supplied with Smart Boards.  The question is:  How can these be used as an effective teaching tool?  We hope the ideas and videos on this page will help answer this question.

Note:  Similar activities can also be done even if you don't have a Smart Board.  These are outlined within each theme unit.

FAMILY AND PETS SMART BOARD ACTIVITY
ALPHABET REVIEW USING THE KOOSH BALL

Koosh Ball Alphabet Smart Board Activity on YouTube

The Smart Board game shown above reviews the previous letters that were introduced in the "Alphabet Program" (c, u, a, t, m, e, q, n, f, h, d and i) related to the "Family and Pets" theme . Distribute the alphabet picture cards found under the heading "Alphabet Program" that represent these letter sounds (at least two pictures for each letter).  Each student takes a turn throwing the koosh ball at the smartboard.  If a child has a picture card beginning with that letter sound they come forward.  Together determine if this is the correct match. This is adaptable for a Center activity.

ALPHABET RECOGNITION AND NUMBER RECOGNITION GAMES

Each student is given a bingo card (if you are a member these are supplied for you).  You can also find bingo card generator tools online.   A student would select a hidden grid from the Smart Board table.  A picture will be displayed.  Each student would mark off the letter that represents the sound on their bingo card.  The first student who has three letters that go across or down would have BINGO.

Number Recognition Using the Ten Frames
The number cards would be turned upside down.  The students would draw a number card and move that many black dots to the ten frame.  The ten frame would represent the same amount as displayed on the number card.  This could continue as a Center activity.

Instant Number Recognition Memory Activity
Allow the students to see the ten frame briefly then cover it with the screen shade. Allow them to discuss how many black dots they saw. The students should share their strategy on how they saw the dots. After, display the ten frame to confirm what they saw.  Example:  One student may have seen 5 and 1 which makes 6.  Another student may have seen 4 white squares and knew this was 6.  Sharing the strategies is an important part of developing math number sense.  This could continue as a Center Activity.
