USING THE SMART BOARD AND NOTEBOOK SOFTWARE ACTIVITIES
Preschool and Kindergarten classrooms are now being supplied with Smart Boards. The question is: How can these be used as an effective teaching tool? We hope the ideas and videos on this page will help answer this question.
Note: Similar activities can also be done even if you don't have a Smart Board. These are outlined within each theme unit.
FAMILY AND PETS SMART BOARD ACTIVITY
ALPHABET REVIEW USING THE KOOSH BALL
The Smart Board game shown above reviews the previous letters that were introduced in the "Alphabet Program" (c, u, a, t, m, e, q, n, f, h, d and i) related to the "Family and Pets" theme . Distribute the alphabet picture cards found under the heading "Alphabet Program" that represent these letter sounds (at least two pictures for each letter). Each student takes a turn throwing the koosh ball at the smartboard. If a child has a picture card beginning with that letter sound they come forward. Together determine if this is the correct match. This is adaptable for a Center activity.
The video demonstrates how numeral printing and identification is introduced through using the Smart Board. It also demonstrates how children are introduced to the concept of how a number can be shown in a variety of ways.
The students will play games that would require them to identify activities and objects found in their school environment. These are simple games that will allow them to become familiar with the Smart Board and notebook software. These games can also be played on the computer that has notebook software downloaded onto it. There is also a printable version of game two available.

SIGHT WORD OCEAN GAME
The video demonstrate the Smart Board version of the game. The students would click on a planet and move the corect spaceship that corresponds to the initial sound of the picture displayed on the planet.
COMMUNITY HELPERS - IDENTIFYING COMMUNITY HELPERS - INITIAL LETTER SOUNDS - ENDING SOUNDS
Smart Board Version of the Game
The students would identify the community helpers displayed in the picture and move the letter that represents the intial letter sound of the picture displayed. This is a good review of their initial letter sound recognition.
Smart Board Version of Ending Sounds Game
The video demonstrates the Smart Board version of the ending sounds game. The game would be displayed on the Smart Board. The students would move the letter to complete the sounds heard at the end in relation to the picture displayed.
SPRING THEME - RHYMING GAMES
Smart Board Version of the Game
Students will roll the die and the Smart Board and move their players to the corresponding rhyming picture. There are two games available. This could be a more competitive game where the person who has has the most rhyming matches is the winner or a cooperation game where they work together to find the rhyming matches. The video demonstrates how the game is played.
DINOSAUR THEME - ALPHABET REVIEW GAME
Students will select a cell from the table. If they select a letter that represents a picture of that letter sound on their game board then they move their player to that picture. There are two game boards. Each player takes a turn selecting the different covered cells. The first person who has their picture game boardl covered with players is the winner. This could also be a cooperation game.
Ten Frame and Other Activities for the Smart Board
The students will match the word to the picture using their knowledge of their alphabet sounds. The students will also drag the correct vowel letter to complete the word that matches the picture. This allows them to practice their knowledge of CVC sounds.
BUGS OR INSECT THEME
The students will be sorting the pictures according to if they belong to the insect or non-insect category through using the Smart Board. This can also be done on the computer if notebook software has been installed. This activity is downloaded from the member site.
WEATHER THEME - LETTERS "C" AND "U" ACTIVITIES
The video demonstrates a Smart Board activity that was created and can be used during Center Time. If you have Notebook software downloaded on your student computers the games can be played on them as well.

APPLES AND NUMBERS THEME - LETTER A
ALL ABOUT ME THEME - Review Letters Cc, Uu, Aa, Tt, Ee and now Qq
This Smart Board activity is used as an introduction of the "Dd" sound an review of the letters "Qq and Gg". The students sort the pictures according to the inital letter sound they hear.
The video demonstrates several games available used to review alphabet lettters and sounds, as well, introduce the math concept of "more or less". These are available in printable versions and for the Smart Board.
